Soul in the Gaping Void
TweetI’m a new fan of Gaping Void. Sure, I’ve seen Hugh MacLeod’s art from time to time; it’s pretty hard to miss his distinctive style. But I didn’t realize how well he can capture the strongest desires of the heart and yearnings of the soul in a single, simple illustration.
Thanks to Tyler Hurst’s #100ppl effort to build the Gaping Voice community, I took a longer look at MacLeod’s art. I really had a chance to understand the depth of the emotions he captures and the breadth of his work.
Of all the pieces in the Gaping Void Gallery, this particular one is my favorite:
Why this one? Because for me, this is the single most difficult thing to do. Expressing your soul to the world means being truly authentic in a world where carefully crafted “brands” get people elected to high office, marketing campaigns sell useless crap and deceit is used for professional promotion. Expressing your soul means telling everyone “This is who I am” when society tells you to shut up and just get an education and a good job. Expressing your soul means having your most heartfelt beliefs criticized.
Expressing your soul is the hardest thing in the world to do, but it the most freeing thing you can accomplish.
Are you part of 100 people?
